Description
“Kettie” is a South African term for a slingshot, also known as a catapult. Given its nature as a projectile launcher, using it safely is crucial to prevent serious injury to yourself and others.
Safety rules for handling and shooting
- Always wear safety glasses. This is the most important safety rule, as projectiles and bands can break or snap back at any time.
- Inspect your equipment. Before every use, check the condition of the bands for any signs of wear, nicks, or damage. Replace them preventatively if you notice any issues.
- Handle with care.Never point a drawn kettie at a person, animal, or anything you do not intend to shoot. A drawn kettie should only be aimed downrange at the designated target.
- Warm up bands safely. When stretching or warming up the bands, do so at waist or chest height, pointing downrange. The pouch should be empty.
- Use lighter bands when learning.Beginners should use lighter bands to develop proper technique. Heavier bands can be difficult to control, leading to “fork hits” where the projectile hits the slingshot frame and can cause dangerous ricochets.
- Always use a lanyard.Lanyards prevent the slingshot from flying back at your face if you accidentally drop it while at full draw.
Safety rules for your surroundings
- Check your backdrop.Ensure your target has a safe backdrop that can absorb or stop the projectile. You must know where your ammunition will go if you miss your target.
- Keep pets and children away.Never shoot a kettie near pets, children, or anyone who is not an active participant on the shooting line.
- Use designated areas. When participating in official competitions, only shoot on designated and demarcated ranges.
- Secure your footing.Be aware of your surroundings, and watch for any rocks or holes that could cause you to slip while shooting.
Rules for using ammunition
- Use safe ammunition.Use appropriate projectiles designed for slingshots, such as clay pellets. Avoid using objects that can cause serious injury, like steel shot, unless you are an experienced competitor on a certified range.
- Only load when ready to shoot.Do not put a pellet in the pouch until you are on the shooting line and prepared to shoot at your target.
- Never shoot at people. This is extremely dangerous and a leading cause of serious injury with slingshots.
