Positiv Resist Spray – For Etching

Etching the blade:

The left-hand side (the side to your left when you hold a knife with the cutting edge down and the tip away from you) of the blade is the presentation side. It is very important not to work in direct sunlight. Also bear in mind that you should put the blade in a dark cupboard or cover it with a soft cloth until you are ready to start the process.

• Start by putting thinners on a piece of tissue paper and clean the blade with it. Now use acetone to remove the thinners. Note: do not use this on the handle slabs.
• Spray a thin, even layer of Positiv20 or Positiv Resist on the blade and leave it to dry overnight. Remember to place the knife in a dark cupboard away from direct light.
• Cut the negative (obtainable from a printer) of your name or logo to size.
• Stick small pieces of masking tape to all four sides and then-place the negative on the blade. Keep it down with a wooden clothing peg.
• Place the blade under a UV light for three to five minutes or hold it in direct sunlight for 1 minute.
• Develop the image with a drop of caustic soda and then dab it dry with a piece of tissue paper.
• Repeat this process until the image is clear.
• Mask off the area with a permanent marker.
• Drop a little ferric chloride over the name or logo, making sure that it’s completely covered. Leave it on for about a minute or until you can see that the name or logo has changed from being shiny to brown/black in colour.
• Dab the ferric chloride dry with a piece of tissue paper.
• Put a drop of caustic soda solution on the image and wipe it clean with tissue paper. Repeat this process two or three times to clean off all the ferric chloride.
• Clean the blade with acetone that has been dropped onto tissue paper.
